Northern Lights FAQ

Some of the more commonly asked questions...

  • WHY CHOOSE WEATHERHOLIDAYS FOR MY NORTHERN LIGHTS HOLIDAY?

A: We have a 100% Strike rate in delivering that bucket list Item of witnessing the Aurora.  Our tour leaders have a great knowledge of the weather patterns in Northern Scandinavia and how cloud interacts with the Mountainous Terrain, and we will travel to one of at least 100 pre-scouted viewing locations to make sure the skies are clear. You will also get 4 chances at seeing the Northern Lights which is a much higher percentage than most Aurora Holiday packages.

Our tours are small group based, with a maximum of  six guests and two team members. The tours are lead by Paul Botten, a very experienced chaser with a track record of putting his teams in the best location possible for viewing storms and tornadoes safely - his and the rest of our teams enthusiasm and knowledge for storms will blow you away!

We have all the latest equipment within our chase vehicles, including mobile internet, satellite based Wxworks Mobile ThreatNet and GPS positioning so we always have the most up to date weather data available to us to ensure we keep you safe and give you the best view of the action possible.

  • ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?

A: Paul Botten (our tour leader)has scouted out over 100 beautiful locations over the last decade and has mapped out numerous Fjord and Lapland Interior locations. He has seen the Lights on every one of his trips and uses the latest weather forecasting tools at his disposal to get you in the right areas. That weather forecasting experience is one of the keys to success on these trips, and a unique element to our experience, thanks to our other weather related holidays and links to our Sister company Netweather.

  • WHAT WILL THE OVERALL COST BE?

A: The cost of our tours includes accommodation and travel during your holiday. Flights (or other means of transport to and from Tromso) aren’t included. Food isn’t included - but a supermarket trip at the beginning of the tour to buy the essentials can keep the costs down, especially when shared between the group. Norway is not the cheapest of countries to eat out in, so this helps everyone with budgeting the overall trip. We often have a celebratory meal on the last night, at a favoured restaurant to celebrate the success of the trip.

  • WHAT HAPPENS IF IT IS FORECAST TO BE CLOUDY DURING MY STAY IN TROMSO?

A: Tromso is a coastal City and gets quite a lot of cloud, so being mobile and knowing where the skies are generally clear is a massive pro for the trip. If the forecast is cloudy in Tromso, it is not uncommon to travel a few hundred kilometres to find those important ingredients of clear skies.

  • WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION WILL I BE STAYING IN?

A: We typically stay in 4 and 5* accommodation in the Tromso area. Every guest will also have their own bedroom.

  • DO I NEED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING?

A: You will need protective Arctic clothing for the January and February trips as the temperature can fall to as low as -25c in the Interior of Lapland should we be in that location. Tromso is usually around -5c to -10c as it is coastal. We use a company that can hire the kit needed for £10 per day or £50 for the trip and can help you with your Arctic clothing package hire when and if needed.

  • WHAT IS THERE TO DO DURING THE DAYTIME?

A: During the Daytime we often go on a Fjord Photography Tour, stopping for lunch. On the winter trips, we can also do activities like Dog Sledding, Snowmobiling or Whale Watching (January Only for Whale Watching)

  • WHERE DO WE FLY INTO AND IN WHAT AREAS DO WE CHASE THE AURORA?

A: We fly into and out of Tromso in Norway, there are numerous flights daily to this location or you can get 1 Stop options via Oslo or Bergen. Our Northern Lights chase area can be as vast as neighbouring Finland and Sweden or further east into Norway.

  • WHAT VEHICLES DO YOU USE?

A: We generally use large estate cars, such as the Skoda Octavia, which have ample room and as there are only 4 people per car. In the winter these cars come with the winter package of studded tyres to keep us safe in the ever-changing road conditions.

  • WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE ON MY TOUR?

A: The September Tour is like a late Autumn day in the UK. Temperatures are around 8-14c, and night times can get as low as the single digits on cold clear nights. The October Tour is like an average winter’s day in the Uk. Temperatures of around 2-5c, and nighttime temps can get down to as low as -5c to -10c but usually around 0c in the Tromso area. The January and February tours will see snow in all areas, with daytime temps in Tromso between -2c and +3c and the Interior between 0c and -15c. The nighttime temps on the Jan and Feb trips can be as low as -10c in Tromso but usually, 0c to -5c and the Interior can get down to -30c but usually anywhere between -5c and -15c on a standard winters night.
